Research Notes on Asthma Symptoms
Symptoms of asthma can range from mild to severe. Some early warning signs of asthma include insomnia, wheezing or coughing after strenuous activities, coughing that occurs mainly at night, a decrease in peak expiratory flow, mood changes, shortness of breath, and cold symptoms. Patients who have severe symptoms of asthma may notice chest pain, chronic cough, rapid breathing, blue lips or fingernails, difficulty talking, and severe wheezing.1

- Asthma symptoms usually occur when the airways become inflamed, during a bronchospasm, or when the airway fills with mucus.1
- Some ways to lower your risk for developing asthma symptoms are to avoid asthma triggers such as: cigarette smoke, dust mites, seasonal pollens, gastroesophageal reflux disorder, and strong chemicals.2
- Symptoms of asthma can occur any time during the day or night.3
