Research Notes on Asthma Risk Factors
There are several factors that may increase the risk of developing asthma. Gender, race, genetics, allergies, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection at an early age are factors that cannot be controlled. Risk factors that can be controlled include smoking, obesity, and exposure to secondhand smoke, dust mites, and cockroaches.1
Fast Facts:
- In childhood, asthma occurs more often in boys than girls; by early adulthood the ratio of occurrence is about equal among the sexes.2
- About 40% to 50% of children with eczema or atopic dermatitis also develop asthma.2
- According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), a child who has a parent with asthma is three to six times more likely to develop the disease than a child who does not have a parent with asthma.2
