Research Notes on Asthenia
Asthenia is a medical term used to describe the symptom of physical weakness and lacking strength.1 The term can also be used to describe a general feeling of loss of strength and weakness over time.2 There are various types of asthenia, including: myalgic asthenia, neurocirculatory asthenia, periodic asthenia, and tropical anhidrotic asthenia.2
Fast Facts:
- Asthenia can be experienced as a side effect of some medications, such as Ritonavir, Gardasil, and fentanyl.1
- Other causes for asthenia include: anemia, anxiety, diabetes, depression, hypothyroidism, kidney disease, and pregnancy.1
- Chronic conditions such as chronic fatigue syndrome or chronic pain are also accompanied by bouts of asthenia.1
