Research Notes on Asterixis
Asterixis (flapping tremor) is characterized by tremor of the wrist when the wrist is extended (dorsiflexion). It is sometimes said to resemble a bird flapping its wings. Also called "liver flap" because it can be a sign of hepatic encephalopathy, which is damage to brain cells due to the inability of the liver to metabolize ammonia to urea. The cause is thought to be related to abnormal ammonia metabolism. 1
Fast Facts:
- Cirrhosis, hepatitis, hypokalemia and septicemia can cause asterixis.2
- Asterixis may also be caused by kidney failure, the use of certain drugs, or brain damage due to metabolic disorder.3
- Blood tests are done to determine whether a liver, kidney, or metabolic disorder is the cause of asterixis.3
