Research Notes on Assistive Technology
Assistive technology allows individuals with disabilities the opportunity to perform tasks and functions that might otherwise be difficult or impossible to accomplish.1 A formal, legal definition of assistive technology was established by the Technology-Related Assistance for Individuals with Disabilities Act of 1988 and that definition continues today with little modification.1 An extensive variety of assistive technology is available today to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities.1
Fast Facts:
- Tools that help individuals with disabilities accomplish tasks are referred to as assistive devices.2
- Common assistive technology devices includes adaptive switches, communication aids, sensory enhancements, mobility aids and more.2
- Typically an assessment is done to determine the need for assistive technology.2
