Aspirin

Research Notes on Aspirin

Over the past 100 years; aspirin has been used more than any other medication for the prevention and control of pain. It works by inhibiting the body's production of a hormone-like substance called prostaglandin, which is one of the building blocks that causes pain by stimulating muscle contractions and blood vessel dilation.

Fast Facts:

  • Aspirin is used for mild to moderate pain, fever and in lower doses, aspirin also has properties as an inhibitor of platelet aggregation to treat transient ischemic attacks and unstable angina.
  • Side effects of aspirin may include gastrointestinal bleeding, in large doses tinnitis and reye's syndrome in children.
  • Overdose is lethal with a mortality rate of 25%.
