Research Notes on Aspiration Pneumonia Treatment
Inhaling foreign material (such as food, liquids, vomit, or secretions from the mouth) into the lungs can cause aspiration pneumonia. Treatment varies depending on the severity of the pneumonia. Hospitalization may be required.1
Fast Facts:
- The two primary approaches to the management of aspiration pneumonia are antibiotics and supportive care.2
- The more acidic the material breathed in, the more injury it can cause in the lung.1
- Symptoms do not begin for at least a day or two.3
