Research Notes on Aspiration Pneumonia Causes
Inhaling foreign material (such as food, liquids, vomit, or secretions from the mouth) into the lungs causes aspiration pneumonia. This can be brought on by a decreased or absent gag reflex, disorders that affect normal swallowing or disorders of the esophagus, excessive alcohol use, anesthesia, sedatives, or old age. Symptoms may not show for a day or two after the aspiration of a foreign matter.1
Fast Facts:
- Usual site for an aspiration pneumonia is the right lung.2
- This type of pneumonia may account for up to 15% of patients with community-acquired pneumonia.2
- Outcome depends on the severity, the type of organism, and the extent of lung involvement.1
