Asphyxiation WisdomCard™
Our Guides and Physician Review team have organized the Top 10 Health Resources on Asphyxiation and compiled helpful research notes below.
Asphyxia is a condition characterized by a severely deficient supply of oxygen to the body arising from the inability to breathe properly. An example of asphyxia is choking. Asphyxia causes generalized hypoxia, which primarily affects the tissues and organs most sensitive to hypoxia, such as the brain, resulting in cerebral hypoxia.1
Fast Facts:
- Some of the causes are choking, suffocation, strangulation, foreign body obstruction and toxic fumes.2
- Symptoms of asphyxia include breathing difficulty, rapid pulse and cyanosis.2
- Asphyxia requires emergency treatment, preferably in a hospital.3
- Asphyxiation is the leading cause of fire deaths, exceeding that of death caused by burns by a 3:1 ratio.4
