Research Notes on Asperger Syndrome Symptoms

Asperger syndrome (AS) is a disorder in the autism spectrum. The most notable characteristic of a child with AS is an obsessive interest in a single object or topic. The subject of the interest can be anything. Children with AS will want to know everything about this object or topic. They gather large amounts of factual information and will talk constantly about the subject. Their conversations typically seem to be random facts about their interest, with no point or conclusion. Children with AS are often isolated due to poor social skills and narrow interests. Others often find conversation with someone with AS difficult due to eccentric behavior or the obsession with talking about one subject.1 Social situations are also difficult due to an inability to understand social rules and cues such as hand gestures, humor or the give and take of conversation. Children with AS are typically factual and have a difficult time with abstract concepts.2
