Aspartame is an artificial sweetener that has been the subject of public controversy regarding its safety. According to studies, when the temperature of aspartame exceeds 86 degrees Fahrenheit, the wood alcohol in aspartame converts to formaldehyde, and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. Many studies have recommended further investigation into the possible connection between aspartame and its potential health risks.
