Research Notes on Ashwagandha


Withania somnifera is also called ashwagandha, Indian ginseng, winter cherry, ajagandha, kanaje hindi and samm al ferakh. It is a short shrub that produces berries.1 The roots have been used for medical purposes for hundreds of years. Ashwagandha has been known to reduce inflammation, treat tumors, decrease stress, increase mental activity, reduce fever, and used as an antioxidant.2

Fast Facts:

  • Pregnant women should not use this herb as it may cause an abortion.3
  • Ashwagandha means "horse's smell" in Sanskrit because the root smells like horse sweat.1
  • Studies show it could be helpful in fighting cancer.4
