Ascites describes having an excess of fluid accumulating in the abdominal cavitiy. This is caused most commonly by cirrhosis and severe liver disease, although it can be an indicator of other significant medical problems. Blood tests and an ultrasound of the abdomen are the most used diagnostic tools.
