Though many people mistakenly think of it as an adult disease, arthritis does occur in children.1 Arthritis of various types may occur in childhood. In many cases, children have a better chance of outgrowing arthritis and a lower risk of disability than adults.2 Early treatment of arthritis in children can help to prevent damage to the joints.3
Fast Facts:
- In the United States, about 300,000 children are affected by some form of arthritis or rheumatic disease.4
- The most common type of arthritis to affect children is juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.4
- Although there is no cure, arthritis is treatable.2
