Arthritis is a group of conditions in which the joints are inflamed. Often this inflammation is accompanied by pain, also known as arthralgia. Some types of arthritis, such as osteoarthritis, happen due to wear and tear on the cartilage. Others, like rheumatoid arthritis occur due to an overactive immune system, which causes inflammation.1 Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States in people over the age of fifty-five.2 There are over 100 different types of arthritis. Combined, they make up the most chronic illness in the United States.1
