Arteriovenous malformations are masses of abnormal blood vessels. AVMs can occur in various parts of the body including the brain, spleen, lung, kidney, spinal column, and liver. If the AVM is in the brain, and bleeding occurs, it can cause severe and often fatal strokes. If detected before a stroke occurs and to ensure the safety of the patient, the arteries feeding blood to the brain can be closed off.
Fast Facts:
The symptoms of arteriovenous malformation are seizures, stroke, and pulsation of blood flow can often be felt and heard by stethoscope.
Treatment for arteriovenous malformation can be surgical removal, stereotactic radiosurgery and endovascular embolization.
The cause of AVM's are unknown. They are believed to be caused by a mistake in the formation of the normal arterial-capillary-venous connections
