Research Notes on Arterial Occlusive Disease
Arterial occlusive disease is better known as atherosclerosis. This disease occurs when a fatty substance called plaque builds up in an artery until it is blocked. Arterial occlusive disease can occur in arteries of the hips and legs and is called peripheral arterial disease.1
Fast Facts:
- Renal artery stenosis is the narrowing of the artery to the kidneys, and can lead to a complete blockage of blood to the kidneys.2
- Mesenteric artery ischemia is blockage of the artery to the intestines.2
- The risks for arterial occlusive disease are family history of atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, and advanced age. If the condition is mild it can be managed by lifestyle changes, or drugs. In more serious cases, surgery.3
