In acute leukemia, too many abnormal, nonfunctional white blood cells are produced in the body, and take over the bone marrow, crowding out the normal, functional white blood cells that are normally found. Arsenic in low doses has been shown to bring about apoptosis, or "programmed cell death" in the cancerous white blood cells.
