Research Notes on Arrhythmia Medications
Arrhythmia medications are used to prevent or treat an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). Antiarrhythmics can suppress the abnormal firing of pacemaker tissue.1 These drugs also depress the transmission of impulses in tissues that are functioning abnormally.1 Calcium channel blockers are used to not only treat arrhythmia, but high blood pressure and angina.2 If you are currently taking medication for arrhythmia, you should consult with your physician before taking any over-the-counter medications or prescription medicines.
Fast Facts:
- Arrhythmia medications should be used with caution if you have asthma, liver disease, or lupus.2
- Possible side effects of using arrhythmia medications include chest pain, rapid heartbeat (tachycardia), slow heartbeat (bradycardia), and fainting.2
- Once started on them, you most likely will have to take arrhythmia medications for life.1
