Research Notes on Aricept and Pregnancy
Aricept is recommended for use during pregnancy only when the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh any potential risks to the fetus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed Aricept as a category C medication. Though drugs in this classification are generally not well studied in pregnant women, animal studies have shown an increased risk the developing fetus when administered during pregnancy.1
Fast Facts:
- When administered at high doses to pregnant animals, Aricept caused an increase in miscarriage and stillbirth.2
- Women who are pregnant or who wish to become pregnant should discuss the use of Aricept with their physician before beginning the medication.2
- Aricept is a brand name of the generic medication donepezil.2
