Research Notes on April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
The month of April has been designated as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Local communities, police departments, and college campuses across America will don teal colored ribbons and streamers to demonstrate the importance of making sexual assault known and eradicated. It is estimated that one in four women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime, yet only about 40% will ever report the crime.1
Fast Facts:
- Although most sexual crimes are committed against women and children, men, too, can be a victim of sexual assault.2
- It is estimated that each year 302,091 women and 92,748 men are victims of an attempted or completed rape.2
- Approximately 70% of rape and sexual assault victims know their attacker prior to the assault.2
