Apgar

Research Notes on Apgar

The Apgar was devised by Dr. Virginia Apgar in 1952. It is used to assess the health of newborn children immediately after childbirth. A score is given for each criteria at one minute and five minutes after the birth. They are activity (muscle tone), pulse, grimace (reflex irritability), appearance (skin color) and respiration. A score of 7-10 is considered normal, while 4-7 might require some resuscitative measures, and a baby with apgars of 3 and below requires immediate resuscitation.
