Research Notes on Aortic Stenosis Symptoms

Individuals with aortic stenosis often have no symptoms until late in the disease. Those who do have symptoms may experience chest pain that increases with exercise and is located behind the breast bone in the center of the chest, but this pain sometimes moves to other areas. Fainting, dizziness, and fatigue are also common symptoms of aortic stenosis as the disease progresses.1

Fast Facts:

  • Some patients with aortic stenosis experience breathlessness while performing simple activities.1
  • Children and infants born with aortic stenosis may become more fatigued than other children, as well as develop breathing problems within the days or weeks after birth.1
  • About 4% of patients never experience any symptoms and aortic stenosis is not diagnosed until the patient has passed due to sudden cardiac death.2
