Research Notes on Aortic Insufficiency
Aortic insufficiency (aortic regurgitation) is the leaking of the aortic valve of the heart. The valve weakens and prevents itself from closing completely. This results in a backward flow of blood from the aorta into the left ventricle of the heart. Historically, rheumatic fever was the primary cause of aortic insufficiency. However, with the availability of modern antibiotics, other causes have become more common. Treatment depends on severity of symptoms and may include surgical repair.
