Research Notes on Anuria
Anuria, sometimes called anuresis, means not passing urine or passing less than 50 milliliters of urine in one day.1 Anuria is caused by a failure to function in the kidneys and can be associated with renal failure.2 Frequent urges to urinate could indicate obstructive anuria or urinary tract infection. Healthy newborns may have no urine output for 24 hours after birth.
Fast Facts:
- Anuria is the non-passage of urine, while oliguria is defined as having an abnormally low urine production.
- It may occur with the end stage of renal disease.
- Anuria is a common symptom of dehydration and shock.
