Research Notes on Antipsychotics and Pregnancy
A study has shown that taking antipsychotics during pregnancy can cause low birth weight. This study has also indicated that discontinuing these medications can be harmful to the mother. Careful monitoring of fetal growth should be followed if a woman on antipsychotics is pregnant.1
Fast Facts:
- Newer atypical antipsychotics are being used for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in pregnant mothers. The side effects seem to be less and appear to have no safety issues during labor or delivery.2
- Some common antipsychotics are Haldol, Thorazine, Compazine, Zyprexa, and Seroquel.3
- Antipsychotic medications are used in the treatment of schizophrenia, mania, psychosis, and bipolar disorder.3
