Research Notes on Antipsychotics
Antipsychotic drugs are commonly prescribed to treat schizophrenia, psychosis, and bipolar disorder. Antipsychotics are put into two separate categories: first generation (also known as typical antipsychotics) which were discovered in the 1950s, and second generation (also known as atypical antipsychotics) which have been recently developed. These drugs cover a large range of receptor targets, but most block receptors in the brain's dopamine pathways.1
Fast Facts:
- Side effects of these drugs include: tardive dyskinesia, weight gain, agranulocytosis, and tardive akathisia.1
- Haldol, Risperdal, Zyprexa, Abilify, and Seroquel are a few drugs classed as antipsychotics.2
- Many less severe side effects such as dizziness and a rapid heartbeat disappear after the first few weeks of treatment.3
