Antioxidants and Ulcers

GuideWisdom™

This WisdomCard managed by: Nicole Kinsey

In the United States, an estimated 1 in 10 people will suffer from ulcers at some point. Peptic ulcers are caused by bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, or H. pylori. A study in 2003 found that those who have low levels of vitamin C are at risk for H. pylori infection. The study, however, did not reveal whether vitamin C, an antioxidant, can actually prevent H. pylori infection. Experts do recommend an increase in vitamin C intake, especially for those who are positive for H. pylori infection because it may help reduce the symptoms, or even prevent the development of peptic ulcers and stomach cancer. Other antioxidants, such as flavonoids, can also help inhibit the growth of the bacteria.
