Gout is caused by uric acid build up. Uric acid is an important antioxidant. However, in elevated levels, antioxidants can cause a number of complications including gout and kidney stones. Antioxidants, which are vital against free radicals, are believed to increase the levels of uric acid that can be harmful to individuals who are susceptible to gout.
