Research Notes on Antimicrobial Resistance
Many diseases are increasingly difficult to treat because of the emergence of drug-resistant organisms, including HIV and other viruses; bacteria such as staphylococci and E. coli which cause serious infections in hospitalized patients; bacteria that cause respiratory diseases such as pneumonia and tuberculosis; food-borne pathogens such as salmonella; sexually transmitted organisms such as Neisseria gonorrhoeae; Candida and other fungi; and parasites such as Plasmodium falciparum which causes malaria.
Fast Facts:
- Antimicrobial resistance has been called one of the world's most pressing health problems.
- The number of bacteria resistant to antibiotics has increased in the last decade.
- Repeated and improper uses of antibiotics are primary causes of the increase in drug resistant bacteria.
