Antihistamines are a class of drugs widely used to treat allergies. Antihistamines work by blocking receptors that cause the swelling, itching, and redness that are common with allergies.1 Antihistamines are available over-the-counter or by prescription.2 Possible side effects of using antihistamines for allergies include low blood pressure, vomiting, and dry mouth.2
