Research Notes on Antihistamines and Children
Recent studies suggest that children should not take antihistamines for treatment of common colds and allergies. While antihistamines may be effective in treating said conditions, the benefits do not outweigh the side effects in children. Children using antihistamines can experience sedation, excitability, hallucinations, breathing difficulty, and arrhythmia.1
Fast Facts:
- One study found that antihistamines improve allergy symptoms, but also decreases learning abilities; in fact, children in the study with untreated allergies maintained higher learning ability than the treated children.2
- A physician may allow over the counter antihistamines for night time use.2
- Check with your child's physician before using any over the counter or prescription medications to treat allergy and cold symptoms.2
- Over the counter treatments like Nasalcrom have shown to be more effective at treating allergy symptoms, and are safer than antihistamines in children.2
