Research Notes on Antifreeze and Pets
It is crucial that a pet be seen immediately if exposed to antifreeze in order for a successful recovery. The longer they remain untreated, the less likely they are to survive. During the first phase of antifreeze poisoning the animal will be lethargic, disorientated, uncoordinated and groggy. During the second (and final) phase the animal will experience symptoms such as vomiting, oral and gastric ulcers, kidney failure, coma and death.1
Fast Facts:
- Antifreeze has a sweet taste that appeals to pets.
- Most cases of antifreeze poisoning occur around the pet's own home and are usually due to improper storage or disposal.2
- If the pet is seen within a few hours of ingesting antifreeze, vomiting is induced to remove any antifreeze still in the stomach and charcoal is placed in the stomach to bind antifreeze in the intestine.3
- It is estimated that about 10,000 dogs and cats are victims of accidental poisoning by antifreeze annually.4
