Research Notes on Antidepressants and Pregnancy
Researchers have spent a great deal of time determining the risks associated with using antidepressants while pregnant. It has been determined that there is a low risk of a baby being born with birth defects or a mother experiencing problems while being pregnant and taking antidepressants.1 Such drugs as citalopram, fluoxetine, and sertraline have been cleared for consideration for use during pregnancy.1
Fast Facts:
- Paxil, Pamelor, and Parnate should be avoided.1
- Some babies may experience temporary symptoms of withdrawal at birth.1
- According to psychiatrists, there is a possible risk of a depression relapse if antidepressants are stopped during pregnancy.
