Research Notes on Antidepressant Suicide Risk Falls With Age

A new review of clinical trial data indicates that the risk of suicide while on antidepressants declines with age. The risk of suicide among young users of antidepressants has been well established prior to this review. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration required companies that marketed these drugs to include a black-box warning alerting health care providers and patients of the risk associated with the drugs.1

Fast Facts:

  • The risk of suicide was highest among people under 25 and lowest in people over the age of 65.2
  • This review looked at 372 trials involved over 990,000 people.2
  • These findings are published in the August 2009 British Medical Journal.
