Research Notes on Antidepressants
Antidepressants are often the first choice of therapy for people diagnosed with moderate or severe depression. Although they may not help you with curing depression fully, they can significantly reduce or decrease the depressive symptoms.1
Fast Facts:
- Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNIs), tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are different groups of antidepressants.2
- Some antidepressants treat more than depression. They can be used to treat sleep problems, anxiety, and certain types of pain.3
- Antidepressants are not usually prescribed for people with bipolar disorder, as research has shown they can bring on a manic or hypomanic phase. Your health care provider can help you find the medication right for you.4
- Antidepressants can have unpleasant side effects. Most are fairly common and usually go away if the drug therapy is continued.1
- It can take up to 12 to 14 weeks for the antidepressant to reach its full effect.1
