Research Notes on Anticoagulants
Anticoagulants are substances that treat blood clots and prevent thrombosis. Some of the brand names for anticoagulants in the United States are Angiomax, Arixtra, Ceprotin, Coumadin, Fragmin, Hep-Lock, Innohep, Lovenox, Miradon, Orgaran, Plavix, Refludan, and Xigris. Anticoagulants are often referred to as blood thinners, though they do not actually thin the blood. They are often used as treatment for certain blood vessel, heart, and lung conditions.
Fast Facts:
- Very young babies and the elderly may be especially sensitive to the effects of anticoagulants.
- May cause birth defects if taken while pregnant.
- Can be taken orally or by injection.
