Antibiotics for Strep Throat

Research Notes on Antibiotics for Strep Throat

When you have strep throat, your physician will most likely prescribe Penicillin, or an antibioticrelated penicillin. Penicillin is the treatment of choice for strep throat. It is usually given in pill form for adults and liquid for children for ten days. A number of other antibiotics are also effective and may be used if a person is allergic to penicillin. Your symptoms should begin to improve shortly after antibiotic therapy is started. Within 24 hours of beginning treatment with penicillin, a person is minimally contagious.
