The use of antibiotics to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been the subject of several clinical trials. Minocycline, an antibiotic, has shown mixed results with an improvement of mild to moderate RA symptoms.1 Other antibiotics have shown modest improvement of RA symptoms when used in combination with drugs that are commonly prescribed for RA.1
Fast Facts:
- Researchers are studying whether antibiotics may be used to stop the progression of rheumatoid arthritis.2
- The antibiotic rifampin is not effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis.2
- Another antibiotic, doxycycline, may be useful in treating RA when used in combination with methotrexate.2
