Research Notes on Anorexia Statistics
Eating disorders affect almost 5 percent of all young women in the United States, and as many as 15 percent of young women have unhealthy attitudes and behaviors about food. Most cases of eating disorders occur in women, with many reporting that their disorders started before they were 20 years old. One study recently found that 70 percent of sixth-grade girls surveyed said that they first became concerned about their weight between the ages of 9 and 11.
