Research Notes on Ankylosing Spondylitis in Women

Ankylosing spondylitis seems to be less common in women than it is in men, however, it does affect women too.1 Women with this condition are often not diagnosed as early as a man might be. Women may actually be misdiagnosed with other conditions, when in reality they actually have ankylosing spondylitis.2

Fast Facts:

  • Although the onset of this condition is somewhat equal in women and men, the progression of this disease may be slower and more painful for women.2
  • Ankylosing spondylitis does not seem to have any negative affects on fertility, the fetus, or a newborn.3
  • Studies revealed that women with chronic diseases such as ankylosing spondylitis are at a higher risk of becoming depressed.2
  • Medications that may be prescribed include corticosteroids, naproxen, sulfasalazine, methotrexate, adalimumab, or etanercept.4
