Ankylosing spondylitis is a rheumatic disease that causes inflammation of the spine and joints in the lower back. A diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis will require an examination of the mobility of the back, examination of the presence of sacroiliac pain, and an examination of neurological function. A physician will then use an x-ray to look for evidence of ankylosing spondylitis in greater detail.1
