Research Notes on Ankylosing Spondylitis Causes
The cause of ankylosing spondylitis is not known for sure, however there is evidence that it may be genetic. People that are born with a specific gene known as HLA-B27 seem to be at a higher risk of developing ankylosing spondylitis.1 Ankylosing spondylitis is an inflammatory disease that causes inflammation of the spine and joints in the lower back. Medication will help control the pain and minimize stiff joints, while an exercise program will help the back maintain strength and mobility.2

- Medications that may be prescribed include corticosteroids, naproxen, sulfasalazine, methotrexate, adalimumab, or etanercept.3
- Rarely, surgery may be used for complications caused by untreated ankylosing spondylitis.2
- Generally ankylosing spondylitis onset occurs in younger people and is more common in men.4
