Research Notes on Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic disease which causes inflammation of the joints between the spinal bones and the joints between the spine and pelvis. It eventually causes the affected spinal bones to join together. While there is no cure for AS, there are treatments and medications that help with the pain and symptoms.1
Fast Facts:
- Ankylosing spondylitis is more common in men.1
- The predisposition to developing AS is believed to be genetically inherited.2
- Beware the "Norman Cousins story" that has circulated for years. According to the Spondylitis Association of America, this story contains many inaccuracies. Ankylosing spondylitis is not fatal. It cannot be cured through laughter. Leading spondylitis researchers and clinicians do not believe Norman Cousins’ diagnosis was accurate.1
