Research Notes on Ankle-Brachial Index Test


The ankle-brachial index test is used to assess an individual's risk for peripheral artery disease. The test may also be done in addition to an abdominal ultrasound and carotid artery ultrasound.1 An ankle-brachial index test involves taking the patient's blood pressure in both arms and the left ankle.

  • Normally performed on people age 50 and over.1
  • May not adequately measure for people with severe diabetes or calcified arteries.1
  • No special preparation is required for the test.
