Research Notes on Animal Assisted Therapy with Horses

Animal assisted therapy with horses, also known as hippotherapy, refers to the use of the movement of a horse as a tool by therapists to assist individuals with disabilities. As a patient interacts with and responds to a horse’s movement, neuromotor function can improve. Physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists may use therapy horses as part of a treatment program to help individuals with disabilities achieve their goals.
