Research Notes on Anhedonia
Anhedonia is the inability to experience pleasure. These pleasures can include eating, exercise, and sexual interaction. It is one of the key symptoms of depression. Theories speculate that the cause of anhedonia is due to the breakdown in the brain's reward system. This involves dopamine.1
Fast Facts:
- Anhedonia makes it very hard to look forward to anything and can put a strain on relationships.2
- Anhedonia may also be seen in schizophrenia and schizoid personality disorder.1
- There is also a rare condition called sexual anhedonia, this is when ejaculation or orgasm happens with no pleasure.1
- This screening tool can help you determine if showing signs of depression. Speak with your doctor with your results.
