Research Notes on Angioplasty
Angioplasty is a medical procedure to open narrowed or blocked blood vessels of the heart. Arteries that become blocked by plaque called atherosclerosis. During angioplasty the balloon catheter is blown up and opens the blocked vessel and restores proper blood flow to the heart.
Fast Facts:
- Angioplasty is used to treat artery blockage and angina that is uncontrolled by medication.
- Although normally a safe procedure some risks of angioplasty are bleeding, arrhythmia, heart attack and stroke.
- Most people can go home 2-3 days after having the procedure.
