Nausea is a common side effect of anesthesia but prolonged nausea is a medical emergency. Nausea as a side effect of anesthetics should not last long and can be treated with antiemetics (medication against vomiting and nausea). Prolonged nausea may also be caused by a more serious condition affecting the gastrointestinal system.
