The severity of anal cancer is categorized by the following stages: Stage 0, Stage I, Stage II, Stage IIIA, Stage IIIB, and Stage IV. The stage and the location of the cancer affects the treatment option. Most patients are treated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Surgery is also an option for patients with very early stages of the disease, especially when the cancer's location makes it easy to operate.
